Taxi, New York – Saul Leiter

Captured in 1957, Taxi, New York transforms an ordinary city encounter into a cinematic study of colour, reflection and movement. A passenger is glimpsed through the window of a yellow cab, partially obscured by another vehicle passing across the foreground. The rich reds, amber tones and deep shadows give the photograph an intimate, dreamlike quality, capturing New York as a series of fleeting and half-hidden moments.

Saul Leiter was an American photographer and painter celebrated for his pioneering use of colour in street photography. Working mainly around Manhattan, he often photographed through windows, rain, reflections and blurred foregrounds, creating images that feel closer to abstract paintings than conventional documentary photographs. Although his colour work received limited recognition early in his career, he is now regarded as one of the most influential photographers of twentieth-century urban life.
