Created in 1952, Don’t Walk captures a rain-soaked New York street beneath the glow of a pedestrian signal. Umbrellas conceal the people below, while the fragmented red lettering and deep green tones turn an everyday city crossing into a mysterious, almost abstract composition. Leiter’s unusual framing gives the image the feeling of a fleeting moment glimpsed through the crowd.

Saul Leiter was an American photographer and painter and an early pioneer of artistic colour photography. Working primarily in Manhattan, he found beauty in ordinary scenes, frequently using rain, reflections, windows, signs and partially obscured figures. His photographs are admired for their painterly colour and quiet atmosphere, and he is now regarded as one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century street photography.
