Taken in the early 1950s, this photograph documents Mykonos long before it became a global hub for mass tourism. At this time, the islanders lived a humble, self-sufficient, and austere lifestyle

Voula Papaioannou (1898–1990) is widely considered a pioneer of humanist documentary photography in Greece. After intensely capturing the tragic civilian realities, famine, and destruction of World War II and the Greek Civil War, she shifted her focus in the 1950s. Her post-war island collections captured the resilience, quiet optimism, and proud daily lives of rural Greek citizens adapting back to peaceful traditions.
